2014 Symposium for Teaching and Learning with Technology

When opened in January 2012, Penn State’s Knowledge Commons at University Park offered students an inviting and welcoming space in the Library, accessible twenty-four hours a day, with a variety of services promoting academic success. Library staff work alongside information technology consultants, technology tutors, and multimedia specialists. A traditional circulation desk exists together with the IT Service Desk. This merger of services has proven popular with both students and faculty. This session presents data collected on the use of these services at Penn State. It reviews how, and when, students use the space and explores how learning spaces like the Commons can be replicated on other campuses.

In our university classrooms, preservice teachers and their professors are challenged to effectively prepare to teach the “app generation,” whose lives are integrated in the digital world. Three professors and their students come together to demonstrate how technology is being creatively leveraged to facilitate and equip them to meet this challenge.

Projects allow students to uniquely apply what they have learned within real-world contexts, but instructors may be reluctant to include projects due to the associated administrative workload despite positive pedagogical reasons. Presenters share how simple, innovative dashboard technologies for progress monitoring and communications have reversed this trend.

During this presentation, attendees will learn about several low-cost, open-source techniques for 3D printing and engage in a conversation on various processes regarding this technology and how it is being used in both education and research.
