Accessibility Technology and Educational Issues: Evaluating the Merits of Multimedia in Online Pedagogy—Barriers and Benefits

Much like the business model of product manufacturing, the entire supply chain process of how raw educational materials are transformed and delivered to final consumers must be reevaluated for current accessibility concerns. The entire accessibility system needs to be viewed as a holistic endeavor. Online courses using multimedia resources compel, enrich, and complement the overall learning experience, but reliably accessing most of those materials has proven difficult. The Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disability Act are clear: digital content must be receivable to all human senses dependent on students’ needs, regardless of where this content resides. Aimed at instructors, designers, developers, and administrators, this session will demonstrate an example of sense deprivation and how other sense obstacles become apparent in the fulfilling of ADA and Rehabilitation Act requirements. The presenters will discuss three significant issues commonly associated with audio/video content delivery:

1) Adequate delivery formats
2) Synchronized closed captioning for video
3) Audio-to-text transcription

A review and further development of software, technology limitations, online course management systems, mobile devices and smart technology will be discussed.
